Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing
- Rust streaks running down the chimney face. Galvanized Famco caps lose their zinc coating after eight to twelve years in Houston’s humidity, especially on south-facing exposures. Once the steel underneath starts weeping rust, the cap is perforated or close to it, and that rust stains brick permanently if you wait.
- Water in the firebox after rain. A cap’s primary job is to shed water away from the flue opening. If you’re finding damp ash or water pooling on the smoke shelf, the cap lid is either cracked, the mesh has separated from the flange, or the storm collar has rotted through at the seam.
